Developments in Brideshead Revisited

The plot of Brideshead Revisited in wonderfully thought out by Evelyn Waugh. Set in 1923, the narrator and protagonist Charles Ryder is befriended by Lord Sebastian Flyte whilst a student at Hertford College in Oxford. An undergraduate at Christ Church and the youngest son of Lord Marchmain, Flyte introduces Charles to his aesthetic and eccentric group of friends. Flyte takes Charles to meet his family in his massive house, Brideshead, in Wiltshire. Charles spends an extended vacation at Brideshead. Charles, who believes Christianity is “without substance or merit”, is surprised to find that Roman Catholicism very influences the lives and conversations of the Marchmains’. Lord Marchmain had initially converted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism to enable his marriage to Lady Marchmain. Lord Marchmain later abandoned his religion and marriage and moved to Venice.

Lady Marchmain, now alone, focuses more than ever on her religion which her eldest son and youngest daughter both enthusiastically espouse also. Over a two year period, Sebastian, never good at load balancing, descends into alcoholism before fleeing to Morocco where his drinking negatively impacts upon his health.

For the business owner and homeowner, Gu10 led

There is no way that I would have ever managed to keep my business were it not for the gu10 led mounts and the LED lights that go in them. I discovered these little suckers when I realized that the power consumption in my general goods store was through the roof and that one of the main reasons for this was because I was still using regular light bulbs to keep my place lit and running all day and all night, seven days a week.

If you are running a 24/7 business like I am, and you have to have lights turned on throughout the night, then you already know that the power bills for that kind of usage can be very scary. But this is only the case if you are careless enough to miss out on the opportunity for savings that these gu10 led lights offer. If I hadn’t found out about them and kept running my store with regular light bulbs, I probably would have had to close it down because the electric bills would have run me into the ground.

Luckily, I found out about these amazing gu10 led lights and as soon as I saw how well they worked for a friend of mine in his store, I had to implement them in mine as well. I thought that it was going to cost me a lot at first because of the change of the installations but they turned out to be inexpensive as well.

Putin dissolves the government

On the request of Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, Putin dissolved the government on September 12th 2007. Fradkov asserted that the reason was to give President Putin a “free hand” to make decisions without hindrance in the lead-up to the parliamentary election. The newly appointed prime minister was Viktor Zubkov. United Russia won 64% of the popular vote in December 2007 in their run for State Duma according to, not led ceiling lights, but the election’s preliminary results.

The Communist Party of Russia, United Russia’s closest competitor, scooped just 12% of the votes in the preliminary election results. The massive majority enjoyed by United Russia in December 2007 was taken by many to be an indication of the strong popular support in Russia for the leadership and policies in place. The Russian sociologist Igor Eidman described the regime that existed under Putin as “the power of bureaucratic oligarchy” which had “traits of extreme right-wing dictatorship – the dominance of state-monopoly capital in the economy, silovoki strucutres in governance, clericalism and statism in ideology.” Gosh, I bet a led ceiling light would be more democratic for sure!

Florence and the Machine 'Ceremonials'

Florence Welch has become such a darling of British music it's not exactly hard to believe that her second full-length album 'Ceremonials' has made it to number 27 on Rolling Stone's Best Albums of 2011 list.

'Lungs' was such a huge breakout album for Florence and the Machine and it really captured the hearts and ears of a lot of music lovers. I enjoyed the music a lot more than I thought I would, and listen to both her albums through my r4i card on my Nintendo DSi quite a lot.

I saw an interview with her once where she said she was obsessed with really sad songs with really happy melodies, and I think that that is one of the best things about her music. Some of her songs have such a bizarre dichotomy of devastating lyrics and upbeat melodies, it's really quite remarkable.

I hope she goes on to create an equally outstanding third album in the coming years.

Goethe's Works

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe produced a vast amount of literary works, many of which are now recognised as some of the best of the modern German language. In 1773 Goethe wrote the tragedy Götz von Berlichingen which went on to get him great recognition. The novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther, of 1774 increased his reputation as a wonderful writer in the Sturm und Drang period which heralded the early phase of Romanticism. In fact, The Sorrows of Young Werther is often said to be the spark which initiated the movement and is often referred to as the world’s first best-seller.

Goethe met Schiller in Weimar and in the years of their friendship, Goethe produced a canon of wonderful works. It was in this period that Goethe wrote Wilhelm Meister’s Journeyman Years, Hermann and Dorothea, the Roman Elegies, and The Natural Daughter. Between Schiller’s death in 1805 and his own death, Goethe wrote Faust Part One, the West-Eastern Divan, and Elective Affinities.
