Lego’s creative influence cannot be measured. For generations of families, the colourful building bricks have littered children’s bedroom floors. Few toys can claim that they have inspired the same ingenuity among children as Lego can. Lego requires children to use an amount of imagination is unparalleled with other toys, and since its inception to today, the Lego Group continues to emphasize the importance of free-form play. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, he named the company after the Danish phrase for “play well”. The basic eight-stud Lego brick as we now know it was first sold in 1949 in Denmark and the patent for it was created nine years later.

The Lego Group has not rested at the invention of its patented brick, indeed, far from. The Lego Group has continued to expand, developing new ideas and created a brand out of Lego.
